Why the Texas Auto Insurance Minimums Are Not Enough

Car accidents alone surpass any auto insurance minimums, get more and here is why

Many people believe that simply going with the minimums for insurance is all that they need.  After all, if a driver has those minimums, they’re legally covered, right?  True, technically, but there are so many other things that can happen that can make those minimums be far below what you need.  Take a close look and make sure that you really are covered, how you need to be.

The insurance requirements in Texas

In Texas, the requirements for insurance coverage include:

  • At least $30,000 in bodily injury coverage for every person in the car
  • A minimum of $60,000 for injuries in each accident
  • The lowest amount of $25,000 for property damage

They seem pretty good when you look at numbers like this out of context.  Great, actually.  What else could you be looking for?  A lot, it turns out. Check out another article we wrote about Auto Insurance Myths!

Why you need more coverage

While those amounts sound great, remember that these amounts indicate how much would be paid out, total in the event you need any or all of these.  So, what about anything above and beyond that?  There’s always more waiting.  Review the top auto insurance terms and then learn why you need more coverage:

The rising cost of medical expensestake a look at why we suggest to get more than the auto insurance minimums

Medical costs, be them your own, those of your passengers, or those of the people in the other car, will add up.  If those costs go past that $30 000 mentioned above, you must pay that extra out of pocket.  If those costs go past the amount of reach person, you have to do the same thing.  Medical expenses are constantly increasing and add up very quickly, even for basic expenses.

Property and cars are more expensive than ever

Both property repairs and car repairs are now even more expensive than ever.  You only have a certain amount of coverage, and you’ll still be responsible for repairing your car as well as the other cars involved.  That will often add up past what you think it will.

There’s no such thing as a maximum cost

What it comes down to is that you can’t exactly put a maximum cost of a car accident when it comes to bodily injury, car repairs, and property damage.  But your insurance policy can.  Make sure that you have coverage that actually, well, covers your needs.  The odds are that those needs will be above the minimum requirements!
